What you see on your first visit

What the setup screens, the free plan card and the two hints on Contacts show a new user, and where things are.

After you sign in for the first time, ContactZapp takes you through three setup screens. It may then show a card about your plan. On Contacts, it shows up to 2 short hints. Nothing is written to your accounts during any of this.

The three setup screens

  1. Connect the accounts you want in sync. See Connect your first account.
  2. Your accounts are connected. You can add another account here. The screen says: "We're reading your contacts now. Nothing is written to your accounts until you start syncing." Tap Next.
  3. Reading your contacts. Reading and finding duplicates carry on in the background. Tap Go to my contacts whenever you like. You don't have to wait.

Tap Skip for now on the first two screens to go straight to your contacts. You can connect accounts later from Settings.

The free plan card

If you're on the free plan, a card follows the third screen. It doesn't appear after Skip for now. The card says "Your plan includes every feature and syncs" a number of contacts. The number comes from your plan, so it isn't repeated here.

It explains the two groups:

  • Synced. The first contacts, up to your plan's number. Any change you make to them is sent to all your accounts.
  • Frozen (plan limit). All other contacts. You can view, edit and merge them in ContactZapp. Changes are not sent to your accounts.

The card ends with: "Your accounts are never changed for contacts past the first" number. "Upgrade any time to sync them all."

Tap Continue to go to your contacts. Tap See plans to compare plans first. For what the free plan limit means, see See your plan and what you use and the linked answer.

The hints on Contacts

The first time you open Contacts, up to 2 hints point at what to do next. They show whether or not you used the setup screens. They show once for your whole account: if you finish them on one device, they don't come back on another.

  • We found N possible duplicates. This hint appears only when there are duplicates. It says "Select Review duplicates to check them." See Review a duplicate. Nothing is merged yet. A new account starts with Auto-Merge on Off.
  • Accounts sync when you ask. It says "Select Start syncing to sync your accounts. To sync automatically, choose a schedule with the button on the right, any time." See Start your first sync and Change how often ContactZapp checks.

Tap Next and Back to move between the hints. Tap Got it on the last one to close them.

Where things are

  • Contacts and History are the two main screens.
  • Start syncing is in the top bar. After your first sync it reads Sync now. Sync details opens the sync panel. See Read the sync panel.
  • Review duplicates appears on Contacts when there are duplicates.
  • Your account menu opens Settings. Its sections are Accounts, Sync, Merging, Add by email, Plan & billing and Advanced.

What happens next

Until you tap Start syncing, ContactZapp only reads your contacts. No scheduled sync runs. Tap Start syncing when you're ready. New accounts check for changes only when you tap Sync now, until you choose a schedule.

If something goes wrong

  • The free plan card didn't appear. It only shows on the free plan, and not after Skip for now. Open Settings › Plan & billing to see your plan.
  • The hints are gone. They show once. Use the links above for what each one pointed at.
  • You left the setup screens before connecting an account. Open Settings › Accounts and add one. See Connect your first account.

On the free plan, why does Synced show fewer contacts than the plan limit (for example 87, not 100)?

Synced only counts contacts that are done: inside your plan's limit and with nothing waiting on you. A contact inside the limit isn't counted as Synced if it needs your attention. A possible duplicate, or a contact with values that need your decision, shows under Need review until you resolve it. After that it moves to Synced. A contact also shows as Updating or Not synced for a short time while a change is still going out. That usually clears on its own.

Contacts past your plan's limit show as Frozen. A frozen contact that also needs review is counted in both Frozen and Need review, so the numbers can add up to more than your total. The plan card in Settings › Plan & billing shows the contacts that sync out of your plan's limit, with a note that says how many contacts your address book holds.
