Syncing

Read the Sync log

See every sync run and whether each change reached your accounts, and retry a change that didn't.

The Sync log lists every sync run and what it did. It also shows whether each change reached your accounts. Field-by-field changes to a contact are in History, not here.

Steps

  1. Tap Sync details.
  2. Tap See all runs. The Sync log opens.
  3. Under Runs, find the run you want. The newest is first.
  4. Tap a run to open it. What the run did, in order lists its steps, newest first.
  5. Under Account updates, check that each change was Updated.

To see older runs, tap Load older runs.

What each badge means

  • Completed. The run finished.
  • Running. The run is still going.
  • Slowed down. The provider asked us to slow down. The run says whether a retry is coming: "retrying at" a time, "a retry is running now", or "won't retry on its own — the next sync picks up the rest".
  • Failed. The run failed. The run's lines name the account and the reason.
  • Cancelled. The run was stopped.

A run shows You ran it when you started it and Scheduled when a schedule did.

What happens next

A change in Account updates shows Queued until it reaches the account. Updates reach your accounts separately from sync runs, so a finished run can still have updates waiting. This often needs nothing from you. We keep retrying automatically.

If something goes wrong

  • A change appears under Needs attention. Tap Retry now, or Retry all.
  • "Retrying won't fix this — open the contact to resolve it." Tap Open the contact and correct it.
  • "Retrying won't help." Tap Stop syncing this change to clear it. The account keeps its current version of the contact until you edit the contact again.
  • The row says to reauthorize. See Reauthorize an account.
  • "We couldn't load the sync log." Your contacts and accounts are not affected. Try again.
  • Why a contact isn't synced. Open the contact. The reason is at the top of its panel. See the linked answer.

Why is a contact Not Synced or Needs review?

Open the contact. The reason is shown at the top of its panel, under Why this contact isn't synced. The usual reasons are:

  • It isn't in one of your accounts yet. We add it at that account's next sync, so there's nothing to do.
  • It may be a duplicate. It won't be added to your other accounts until you merge it or choose Don't merge.
  • A change couldn't reach one of your accounts. Open the contact to see which one and retry.
  • You deleted it in one account and Pass deletions on to the other accounts is off. The other accounts keep it.

Needs review means one of your accounts deleted a value, such as a phone number, that another account still has. Open the contact, check what each account has, then press Accept current values or Edit these values instead.
