History and roll back

Restore deleted contacts

Bring back a contact you, a sync or a bulk delete moved to Deleted, for as long as History keeps the deletion.

A deleted contact isn't gone. It moves to Deleted, and you can restore it for 12 months after it was deleted. This covers contacts you deleted, and contacts deleted in one account that ContactZapp then deleted in the others.

Steps

  1. Tap Contacts.
  2. Tap the Deleted filter.
  3. Find the contact. Tap Restore on its row.

To restore several contacts, repeat step 3 for each one.

What happens next

The contact is back in your Contacts list. History shows "You restored" and the contact's name.

Two-way accounts that lost their copy are sent the contact again.

If something goes wrong

  • "Deleted more than 12 months ago. It can no longer be restored." The 12 months have passed. The row has no Restore button, only Delete forever.
  • "We couldn't save this change. Try again in a moment." Tap Restore again.
  • The contact isn't in Deleted. A merge doesn't delete a contact. To split a merge, see Undo a merge. A contact you erased with Delete forever can't be restored.
  • You'd rather deletions weren't passed on. In Settings › Sync, turn off Pass deletions on to the other accounts.

What's the difference between deleting a contact and "Delete forever"?

Delete moves the contact to Deleted and removes it from your other accounts, so it is not gone. Read-only accounts keep their copy, and a paused account gets the deletion when you resume it. You can restore it from the Deleted filter for 12 months after you delete it. After that it can no longer be restored.

Delete forever permanently erases the contact from ContactZapp, including its history, and removes it from your accounts. You can't undo it. Read-only and paused accounts keep their copy, and so does any account we can't reach. We show you which ones, so you can remove those copies yourself.
