Duplicates and merging

Undo a merge

Split a merged contact back into the separate contacts, right after the merge or later from its history.

Undoing a merge splits the contact back into the separate contacts. Their earlier values come back too.

Right after you merge

  1. Tap Undo in the message that appears after Merge these N. It stays for 15 seconds.

The message then says the merge was undone and all the contacts are back. Tap See the Sync log to check the result.

This message appears only for a merge you do by hand in Review duplicates. For an Auto-Merge, use the next section.

Later, or after an automatic merge

  1. Tap Contacts and open the merged contact.
  2. Find Recent changes.
  3. Find the row for the merge. It reads Merged.
  4. Tap the icon at the end of that row. Its name is Roll back to here.
  5. Check the list of changes. It says the contact "becomes N contacts again".
  6. Tap the button that starts "Roll" and ends "back to" and the time, to confirm. Tap Cancel to leave things as they are.

This also undoes every later change to that contact. You can't undo a single field. For the full steps, see Roll back a contact.

What happens next

Your accounts are updated on the next sync. A paused account gets the changes when it comes back online. The roll back shows in History like any other change, so you can undo it too.

If something goes wrong

  • "We couldn't undo that merge. Open the contact and roll it back from History." Follow the second set of steps.
  • "We couldn't roll back this contact. Try again in a moment." Nothing was changed. Try again.
  • "This can no longer be restored." The merge is more than 12 months old, and History keeps 12 months. It can't be undone. Tap OK.
  • There is no icon on a row. The first row of a contact can't be rolled back, and neither can a row that only shows a match.
  • Don't want it to merge again? Merge by hand, or choose Don't merge in Review a duplicate. To change what merges by itself, see Set the Auto-Merge level.

Can I undo a merge if it picked the wrong information?

Yes. Right after you merge duplicates by hand in Review duplicates, an Undo button shows for 15 seconds. After that, open History (or the contact's change history), choose the moment before the merge, and use Roll back to here. We show you exactly what will change before you confirm.

Rolling back splits the merged contact back into the separate contacts and restores their earlier values. It also undoes every later change to that contact, so you can't pick one field to undo. History keeps 12 months, so a merge older than that can't be rolled back.
