An account shows a warning

Find what an account's warning means and the page that fixes it.

An account in Settings › Accounts shows a warning. ContactZapp skips an account with a warning until it's fixed. Your contacts are safe.

Steps

  1. Open your account menu and tap Settings. Then tap Accounts.
  2. Read the warning on the account's row. Find it below, then follow the link.
The account shows What to do
Reauthorize See Reauthorize an account.
"This password no longer works. Open the account and enter a new app-specific password." (iCloud) or "...a new password." Open the account and enter the new password. See Reauthorize an account.
"This connection can only read. Reauthorize, or remove ContactZapp in your account's permissions and link it again." See Reauthorize an account.
"This connection can't read your contacts. Reauthorize and allow contacts access." See Reauthorize an account.
"Paused", or "Paused · over plan limit" See Pause or resume an account.
"Will be disconnected on" a date The account has been paused for a while. Resume it before that date. See Pause or resume an account.
"ContactZapp can't read this account. Unlink it, then link it again." Open the account and tap Unlink this account. Then add it again.
"No address book selected — nothing syncs from this account." Open the account and choose an address book.

What happens next

When the cause is fixed, the warning goes away. ContactZapp picks the account up at the next sync. Nothing else to do.

If something goes wrong

  • The warning stays after you reauthorize. Remove ContactZapp from your account's permissions page, then link the account again. See Reauthorize an account and the linked answer.
  • Microsoft says your work account doesn't exist. Work and school accounts do work. Your browser is usually signed in to a different Microsoft account. See the linked answer.
  • You can't tell which account is skipped. The Sync log names it: "This account was skipped — it needs reauthorizing", or "You paused this account. It doesn't sync until you resume it."

My account shows a “Reauthorize” badge and it is not going away. What do I do?

Reauthorize means we can't use the permission we have for that account any more. Open the account in Settings › Accounts, press Reauthorize, and on the consent screen allow ContactZapp to see and edit your contacts. If the badge stays, remove ContactZapp on your account's permissions page (Google: myaccount.google.com/permissions; Microsoft: microsoft.com/consent), then link the account again. For iCloud and CardDAV, open the account and enter a new password instead; for iCloud use a new app-specific password.

What's the difference between pausing an account, unlinking it, and setting it to read-only?

Read-only means we read that address book and never change it. Open the account in Settings › Accounts and choose Read-only under Sync direction.

Pause stops us from reading and writing that account for now. We keep the connection and its history, and Resume this account picks up where it stopped. We disconnect an account that stays paused for 30 days, and we email you 3 days before. Changes waiting for it are dropped at that point.

Unlink disconnects the account. Nothing is deleted in the account itself. You can link it again later. Contacts that also exist in your other accounts stay in ContactZapp. Contacts that came only from that account are hidden until you link it again.

I am connecting my work Microsoft account and Microsoft says the account doesn't exist, or it can't verify my device, and sends me back to the email box. The account is real. What do I do?

Work and school Microsoft accounts do work with ContactZapp, so the account is not the problem. This usually happens when your browser is already signed in to a different Microsoft account, for example one from another organization. Microsoft's sign-in page then mixes the two up.

When Microsoft shows its list of accounts, choose the work account you want, or Use another account. If the list does not appear, sign out of all Microsoft accounts in that browser, then connect again from the start.

If it still fails, a separate browser profile with no Microsoft sign-ins usually works. If Microsoft shows a code starting with AADSTS, send it to us: that code tells us whether your organization's administrator needs to approve ContactZapp.
