Manage your sign-in identities
See every way you can sign in, which one is your billing identity, and how to remove a Google or Microsoft sign-in.
A sign-in identity is a way to sign in to your ContactZapp account. Settings › Accounts lists all of them. You can't add or remove one in that list. A Google or Microsoft account becomes a sign-in identity when you connect it, and stops being one when you unlink it. One identity, your billing identity, always stays.
See your sign-in identities
- Open your account menu and tap Settings. Then tap Accounts.
- Find the Sign-in identities card. It lists each identity with its service (Google, Microsoft or Email) and its address.
- Look for the Billing identity badge. It marks one identity.
You can also tap Sign-in identities are in Accounts › in Settings › Plan & billing.
If the list doesn't load, the card says "We couldn't load your sign-in identities. Try again in a moment." Tap Try again.
Ways to sign in
You can sign in with Google, with Microsoft, or with a code we email you. See Sign in to ContactZapp. Every identity in the list works for signing in. They all open the same ContactZapp account, with the same contacts.
How an account becomes a sign-in
When you connect a Google or Microsoft account, it joins the list for as long as it stays connected. This is true for any account you add, not only the one you first signed in with. See Add another account.
An iCloud or CardDAV account is never a way to sign in.
If Google or Microsoft hasn't confirmed the address of the account, the address is listed but you can't use it to sign in with an email code.
Your billing identity
Your billing identity is the sign-in that your billing account uses. Every account has exactly one. It stays on the list when you unlink its account. It also stays after a factory reset.
You don't change it in ContactZapp. The card says: "Your billing identity always stays; change it from your billing portal." It follows the billing email you set in the billing portal. See Manage or cancel your subscription.
After you change the billing email in the portal, Plan & billing tells you what happens next:
- "Your billing email in the billing portal is now {email}. To make it your billing identity and a way to sign in, open the link we sent to that address while you're signed in." Open the link, then tap Confirm.
- "The billing email you set in the billing portal, {email}, is already used by another ContactZapp account, so your billing identity hasn't changed." Nothing moves. Change the billing email in the portal, or remove that address from the other account.
- "Your billing identity now matches the billing email in your billing portal." Nothing to do.
Remove a Google or Microsoft sign-in
You remove a sign-in by unlinking the account behind it.
- Open your account menu and tap Settings. Then tap Accounts.
- Tap the settings icon of the account.
- In the Unlink this account card, read the line about signing in. Then tap Unlink this account, and confirm.
The card tells you which of two cases applies before you tap:
- "You won't be able to sign in to ContactZapp with this account any more." The account leaves the list at the same moment it is unlinked.
- "You can still sign in with this account after you unlink it, because it's your billing identity." The account stays on the list.
For an iCloud or CardDAV account the card says nothing about signing in.
The unlink also stops syncing with the account and hides the contacts that came only from it.
A paused account is disconnected automatically on the date shown after Will be disconnected on. That removes its sign-in in the same way. See Pause or resume an account.
What happens next
- You can't use that sign-in any more. If you later sign in with an account you unlinked, you may land in a new, separate ContactZapp account. It has none of your contacts and doesn't sync with your first one.
- Sign in with your billing identity. Connect other accounts from there.
- Factory reset. It keeps your billing identity and disconnects your other sign-ins. The confirmation says so: "You keep your billing sign-in. Your other {count} sign-ins are disconnected from ContactZapp." See Factory reset.
If something goes wrong
- You signed in and your contacts are gone. You may have signed in with an account you had unlinked. That starts a separate account. Your contacts are still in the first one. Sign in with your billing identity to see them. To bring the two accounts together, contact support with both email addresses. See the linked answer.
- You can't remove an identity from the list. The list has no remove button. Unlink the account behind it.
- You can't remove your billing identity. It always stays. Change it in the billing portal.
- "We couldn't save this change. Try again in a moment." when you unlink. The account is still linked. Try again.
Related questions
I signed in with a different email and now I see different contacts, as if I have two ContactZapp accounts. What happened?
Your ContactZapp account belongs to the email you signed up with. That is your billing sign-in. Each Google or Microsoft account you connect also lets you sign in, for as long as it stays connected, and you see the same contacts whichever one you use.
If you unlink an account and later sign in with it, we start a new, separate ContactZapp account for that email. The two accounts don't share contacts and don't sync with each other.
To bring them back together, contact us and tell us both email addresses. We'll take it from there.
Why can't I unlink this account?
You can unlink any account. On Settings › Accounts, a row shows Unlink only when the account is paused or can't be read. For other accounts, open the account with the gear button and press Unlink this account at the bottom of the panel, then confirm. If you unlink the account you sign in with for billing, you can still sign in with it, because it's your billing identity. Contacts that came only from the unlinked account are hidden, and ContactZapp erases its own copy 30 days after you unlink it. Linking the account again within that time brings them back. If you link the account again after that, ContactZapp rebuilds those contacts from the account itself. If it fails with "We couldn't save this change", try again in a moment.
What does a factory reset delete, and what does it keep?
Factory reset (Settings › Advanced) deletes everything ContactZapp holds for you: your contacts, the Deleted list, History, your merge choices, your backups and your settings, which go back to their defaults. It also disconnects all your accounts, and it signs you out.
It doesn't delete anything in your Google, Microsoft, Apple or CardDAV accounts. Those keep their contacts as they are now. You keep your billing sign-in and your plan. If you pay for a plan, your subscription keeps running until you cancel it in the billing portal. Your other sign-ins are disconnected from ContactZapp.
This can't be undone, so use Export everything first if you want a copy. After you reconnect, contacts you told us not to merge can be suggested again, and duplicates in read-only accounts can come back. We can't do a factory reset while a sync is running. Wait for it to finish, then try again.
