Syncing

Choose how deletions sync

Decide whether a contact you delete in one account is deleted from your other accounts too.

When you delete a contact directly in Google, Microsoft, iCloud or CardDAV, ContactZapp notices at its next check. One setting decides what happens then: Pass deletions on to the other accounts. It is on until you turn it off.

Steps

  1. Open your account menu and tap Settings. Then tap Sync.
  2. Find Pass deletions on to the other accounts. The switch is on or off. The line under it reads "Delete a contact in one account and it's deleted in the others too. You can undo it for 12 months."
  3. Tap the switch to change it.

When it is on

At the next check, a contact deleted in one account moves to Deleted in ContactZapp. We also delete it from your other two-way accounts. You can restore it for 12 months.

  • Read-only accounts keep their copy.
  • A paused account gets the deletion when it syncs again.
  • A contact that is over your plan's limit stays in your accounts.
  • If the same contact has a second copy in that account, we wait until every copy there is gone.

How soon we notice depends on how often we check. See Change how often ContactZapp checks.

When it is off

Your other accounts keep their copies. The contact stays in ContactZapp. We don't treat it as an error.

  • In the Contacts list, the contact reads Not synced. Its tooltip reads "Not synced — deleted on" followed by the account.
  • In the contact's details, a message reads "Deleted in" followed by the accounts, then "Deletions are not passed on to your other accounts." Tap Change this in Settings to open the setting.
  • The account's badge reads "Deleted on" followed by the account, "— bring it back". Tap it, then tap Recreate on followed by the account, to put the contact back there. We show Recreating on… while it runs.

Turn it on after deleting contacts

Turning the switch on applies to contacts already marked as deleted in an account too. At the next sync, we delete them from your other accounts. We don't ask you first.

If we can't finish at once, Settings reads "Deleted 40 of 90 contacts. The rest will be deleted at your next sync." (with your numbers), or "Some contacts are still waiting to be deleted. They will be deleted at your next sync." The switch stays on. Nothing for you to do.

Contacts you restore after that are not deleted again.

What this setting doesn't change

It doesn't change what happens when you delete a contact in ContactZapp. That deletion goes to your two-way accounts either way. See Delete a contact.

If something goes wrong

  • "We couldn't save this change. Try again in a moment." The switch goes back to where it was. Tap it again.
  • A contact deleted in one account is still in another. Check the setting is on. Then check that the other account is two-way and not paused. See A contact is missing from an account.

What happens if I delete a contact directly in a connected account?

At its next check of that account, ContactZapp sees the contact is gone. What happens next depends on Pass deletions on to the other accounts in Settings › Sync, which is on by default.

When it is on, the contact moves to Deleted in ContactZapp, and we delete it from your other two-way accounts. You can restore it from Deleted for 12 months. When it is off, your other accounts keep their copies. The contact shows as deleted in that account, and you can put it back there with Recreate on Google (or Microsoft, iCloud or CardDAV) in the contact's details. If you switch Pass deletions on to the other accounts on later, it also deletes, at the next sync, the contacts you had already deleted in an account while it was off. They go to Deleted, where you can restore them.

Read-only accounts are never changed, so they keep their copy either way.
